Julia Hunter receives Girl Scouts Gold Award

Posted on January 25, 2017 by

Senior Julia Hunter was recently honored with the Girl Scouts Gold Award. Julia was the only girl in her service unit this year to achieve this level. She spent more than 100 hours creating and leading a STEM camp for underserved girls from Southeast Washington, DC.

This group of girls from Stanton ES, along with their teachers and volunteers, assisted Julia in completing this project.

Case Western Reserve awarded her a four-year, approximately $25,000 per year scholarship.  The letter included a hand-written note about her Gold Award and how they feel she would make an impact in the Cleveland community.

Seniors Annie Xie and Anna Zeng and Julia's sister, freshman Emily Hunter, supported and helped Julia.

Yearbook and newsmagazine selected as CSPA Crown finalists

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced their lists of yearbook and news Crown finalists, and McLean’s 2016 Clan yearbook was one of just 51 high school books in the nation selected for this prestigious honor, while The Highlander newsmagazine was one of 67 news publications to be selected. Both publications will receive either a Silver or Gold Crown at the award ceremony at Columbia University on March 17.

It’s also exciting to note that McLean is one of just four schools in the country to have BOTH their newspaper and yearbook staffs named as Crown finalists this year!

Congratulations to McLean’s student journalists!

Our Model United Nations club held its second annual conference at McLean, McMUNC, on Oct. 21 -22.  Thirty-two area schools attended with over 600 students participating.  The Secretariat was made up of  Secretaries General Alex Brunner and Fatima Shahbaz, Chief of Staff Tashi Gyatso, Director of Crisis Camille Richter and Directors of Technology Siddarth Shankar and Sungmin Kang. All were extremely pleased with the conference and proud of the club’s hard work in putting it together.

The guest speaker was Glenn Kessler from The Washington Post, who is the “fact checker” for political statements—the person who Trump/Clinton referred to during a debate. Glenn evaluates their statements for truthfulness and awards 1-4 “Pinocchios” based on the veracity of the statement. He was a terrific speaker and the club greatly appreciated him speaking at the conference.

Congratulations to our Model UN for hosting another successful conference!
